Privacy policy

Last updated 19 May 2026 · plain-English version

Who we are

SET (Samoan Education and Training) is an online education provider run from Australia, delivering Australian-equivalent learning to students in Samoa and the wider Pacific.

SET's operating entity is (entity being formalised). Once incorporated, the full legal name and ABN/ACN will appear here. SET is subject to the Australian Privacy Act 1988 as its operating entity is Australian-domiciled.

What we collect

  • Identity: your name, email, village, language preference, optional profile photo.
  • Education records: placement-test results, course enrolments, lesson progress, quiz answers, assignment submissions (including any voice transcripts or photos of handwritten work you upload), grades, certificates.
  • Communication: messages you send to teachers, including content you share.
  • Technical: IP address, device type, browser, network conditions (so we can serve audio-only when your connection is slow). Standard server logs are kept 90 days.
  • Payment information (if applicable): card-tokenised through Stripe — SET never sees your card number.

What we don't collect

  • We don't upload your voice audio. Voice transcription runs in your browser (Web Speech API). Only the resulting text is saved.
  • We don't track you across other sites. No advertising cookies, no third-party trackers.
  • We don't sell your data. Ever. To anyone.

Where your data is stored

SET data is stored on servers in Sydney, Australia (Hetzner Cloud), with daily encrypted backups also in Australia. Your data does not leave servers SET controls, except where you explicitly use third-party features (e.g. clicking a YouTube embed).

When SET launches in additional countries, we may add region-local data residency.

Who sees your data inside SET

  • You see everything we hold about you (Profile → Download all my data).
  • Your teacher sees your enrolment status, progress, submissions, grades, and messages with you.
  • Your aiga sponsor (if you have one) sees your overall progress percentage — not your individual submissions, messages, or grades unless you opt in.
  • SET admins see your account record for operational purposes. Access is logged.
  • Nobody else sees your data without your explicit consent (e.g. when you generate a reference letter for an employer).

AI use disclosure

SET's course content is written by qualified teachers; AI is not used to draft it. SET uses AI only to help students with optional features like voice transcription, OCR, and spelling/grammar cleanup. The voice and OCR features run free in your browser — your audio and photos are not sent to AI providers by SET. The cleanup pass runs on SET's servers using Anthropic Claude — only your text is sent, not your personal identifiers. See our AI policy for the full breakdown.
