Dear Mr Patel,

I hope this email finds you well.

I am writing to formally request one day off next Friday, 30 May 2026.

The reason is that my aunt is travelling from Savai'i and will only be in Apia for one day.

She is elderly and I would like to spend the day with her, as she rarely visits.

To make sure my shift is covered, I have already spoken to Tavita and he has agreed to swap shifts with me — he will work my Friday and I will work his Saturday in return.

I have written the swap on the roster board and I have asked him to confirm with you directly.

If there is any concern with this arrangement, please let me know as soon as possible and I will find another solution.

Thank you for considering my request.

Kind regards,

Sina Faleolo

How this works

On every submission, SET breaks the text into overlapping 5-word chunks (“shingles”) and computes Jaccard similarity against every other submission in the same cohort and assignment. Pairs above ~25% Jaccard get flagged for teacher review.

Common boilerplate (greetings, sign-offs, the assignment's own brief) is auto-excluded so legitimate convention doesn't create false positives.

The algorithm catches verbatim copies AND lightly-edited copies (word swaps, name changes) because most 5-grams survive that kind of edit. It does NOT catch deep paraphrasing — for that, SET weighs the writing-process signals (time-on-task, paste fraction) and falls back to oral defense for high-stakes work.
